There is
evidence of a great person called “Kos Mama”, in Sri Lanka who introduced the
jack fruit for Sri Lankans which was then used as an everyday meal. His real
name is Arthur Vincent Dias. He was born to a wealthy family in Panadura, Sri
Lanka and the road flowing along his house at Panadura. Jack fruit was first
introduced through a campaign which was then eaten as a meal other than rice in
many areas.
It has a high
nutritional value so it is taken as food also the timber that can be taken from
its bark is very useful for making furniture and at house constructions. It is
very useful as it is termite proof. It is widely used to manufacture doors,
windows and in roof constructions. Also it is exported to Europe from Sri
Lanka.
The jack
fruit is more efficient in its growth as it can be planted without additional
need of fertilizers. So when there’s always a jack tree at your own garden
there always will be plenty of food for free
as it bears a huge amount of fruits for a year which is necessary in a
situation like the present Covid -19 pandemic. There are many other food
products made out of the jack fruit and it is consumed when it is at different
stages as different dishes in Sri Lanka. Jack fruit is also used to make dishes
that suit the modern society with different spices and ingredients added to it.
Presently there is another person who
makes many food products using the jack fruit. The specialty is, he also hails
from Panadura who can be considered as the present “ Kos Mama ”. He is Mr. Lalith Manjula conducting
the business under the name of “Akalanka Products” using the jack fruit. If it
is continued, it would help in gaining foreign income to the country by
exporting these products as many foreigners as well as the Sri Lankans in other
countries like to consume them. Some of his modern food products other than the
traditional dried Jack (Atu kos),Polos Pickle, etc. are as follows,
Once all them are put together in one single
jack tree, its wood can be exported and its fruit can be used for making
different dishes helping to vanish the hunger of poor people as it is abundant,
it could develop as a self-employment
like mentioned above and it will produce many job opportunities for the people,
also motivating the visiting of tourists to our country which will eventually
bring employment ending poverty and an income to the country raising the
country’s standard and reputation higher.
